Docker has recently conducted a survey termed as “Evolution of the Modern software Supply Chain†2016 and the survey results are evident to support the fact containers has become the face of modern technology such as hybrid cloud, micro-services architecture and app development through Docker.

According the survey,
- 41% of the respondents claim that the reason for using Docker was the application portability.
- On an average 13x increase in frequency of software releases
- 80% organizations citing Docker as part of their cloud strategy
- Key benefit of Docker is delivering microservices architecture and actively planned by 47% of respondents as an initiative of 2016

- 65% respondents said they are using Docker for accelerated software development
- 48% said Docker allows better control on app development environments
- 41% said application portability was the key factor to opt in for Docker
Key Finding 2: Docker is delivering quantifiable improvements to application delivery by accelerating DevOps practices
- 65% said Docker eliminated “works on my machineâ€
- 55% said they achieved faster development onboarding
- 46% said there is increase in software releases
- 45% said Docker empowering developers to own their code
- 40% said Docker allows ability to use any language and tooling
- 25% said Docker improved collaboration with IT ops
Key Finding 3: Docker is central to hybrid cloud strategies as it enables freedom of choice of on premises, private and public environments.
- 80% said Docker is part of cloud strategy
- 60% said they are planning to use Docker to migrate workload to cloud
- 38% said they can achieve hybrid cloud portability using Docker
Key Finding 4: Docker enables microservices architecture delivery and the modernization of legacy monolithic apps.
- 47% respondents have seen docker as beneficial for delivering microservices
- 78% are using or planning to use docker to build new microservices applications
- 71% are using or planning to use docker to containerize a legacy app
- 44% said organizations are adopting microservices
- 65% people said they are facing challenges in maintaining legacy applications
- 59% said organizations have challenges from inertia of legacy apps and infrastructure
